Gathering of voices: Addressing sexual assault in indian country

At one time, the presence of a supportive environment is what kept tribal citizens bonded with their communities. It strengthened Indigenous communities by creating safe zones where citizens knew they would receive understanding, acceptance and help if needed. While support hasn’t been eradicated, today the overall sense of kinship between tribal citizens which contributed to a supportive environment has fragmented due to multiple factors. Getting citizens informed about the long-lasting consequences of sexual assault will assist them in restoring community support systems. Because its influence affects people, programs and social change, the theme we chose for 2022 is “The Power of Support”. We know that support can empower survivors of sexual assault to move forward and take back control of their lives. Even a simple encouraging word could be a turning point in a survivor’s life.

This event will be a hybrid event, taking place in person at the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City and live-streamed online on our Facebook page. All attendees must register at the link below. Our featured speaker for the event is Dawn Stover who is currently the Executive Director of the Alliance of Tribal Coalitions to End Violence (ATCEV). Because of her continuous hard work at this organization and others, Dawn understands the role support of tribal programs and the community play in creating awareness and strengthening safety for survivors of sexual assault.
